5. Cleaning, disinfection and storage

Cleaning and disinfection #
Pump motor Wipe with a clean, damp cloth with 70% ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol if necessary. Do not immerse the Breast Pump motor in water. Wipe with a clean, damp cloth with 70% ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol if necessary. Do not immerse the Breast Pump motor in water.
Funnel, silicone membrane, valve and milk collection cup Disinfect the funnel, silicone membrane, valve and milk collection cup. Do not microwave these parts. Clean with mild detergent or clean water.

Be careful when removing and cleaning the valve. If the valve is damaged, the Breast Pump will not work properly. To clean the valve, gently rub it in warm water with a few drops of cleaning solution. Do not insert objects into the valve, they may cause damage.

Manual cleaning
Place the Breast Pump parts in a clean basin used only for infant feedingDo not place the parts directly into the sink. #

1. Fill the basin with soap and hot water.
2. Polish the parts with a clean brush used only for infant feeding.
3. Rinse the parts under running water or in fresh water in a separate basin.
4. Allow to air dry thoroughly. Place the pump parts, basin and bottle brush on a clean, unused tea towel or paper towel in a place protected from dirt and dust. Do not use a tea towel to rub or dab items dry.
5. Clean the sink and bottle brush. Rinse them well and let them air dry after each use. Wash them by hand or in the dishwasher at least every few days.

Cleaning in the dishwasher #

1. Make sure small parts are placed in a closed basket or mesh laundry bag. Run the dishwasher with hot water and a heated drying cycle.
2. Remove the parts from the dishwasher with clean hands. If items are not completely dry, place on a clean, unused tea towel to dry thoroughly before storing.
3. Do not use a tea towel to rub or dab items dry.

After cleaning (for extra protection) #

1. For additional bacteria removal, disinfect the pump parts, wash basin and bottle brush at least once a day after cleaning them.
2. Pump parts that come in contact with your breast or breast milk can be disinfected with steam or let them boil in water for 5 minutes.

                TIP
The funnel, silicone membrane, valve and milk collection cup are dishwasher safe.

DO NOT wash the motor of the Breast Pump. DO NOT use harsh chemicals to clean the funnel, silicone membrane, valve and milk collection cup. Preferably use detergent specifically for baby bottles..

Guidelines for storing pumped milk #

1. Use breast milk storage bags or clean, food-safe containers with tight-fitting lids.
2. Avoid plastic containing bisphenol A (BPA) (recycle symbol #7).
3. Write the date on the storage bag. Include your child’s name if giving the milk to a child care provider.
4. When using: gently twist the container to re-mix the cream portion of the breast milk that may surface with the rest of the milk. Do not shake the milk, this may break down some valuable parts of the milk.
5. Refrigerate the milk, if possible, immediately after pumping. You can place the milk in the refrigerator, put it in a cooler or insulated cooling package. Or you can freeze the milk in small portions for later feedings Breast Pumped milk can be stored without refrigeration for up to 4 hours after pumping.

Type of breast milk Countertop (25 degrees) or colder (room temperature) Refrigerator (4 degrees) Freezer (-18 degrees or colder)
Freshly pumped Up to 4 hours Up to 4 days Within 6 months is the recommendation, up to 12 months is acceptable
Defrosted, previously frozen 1 or 2 hours 1 or 2 hours Never refreeze breast milk after thawing

For leftover food (from a recently offered bottle), use within 2 hours after the baby has finished bottle feeding.

                TIP
1. Store milk in the back of the freezer or refrigerator, not in the door.

2. When freezing, leave an inch of space open at the top of the collection container. This is because breast milk expands when it freezes.

3. Milk can be stored in an insulated cooler bag with frozen ice packs for up to 24 hours when traveling.

4. If you do not plan to use pumped milk within 4 days, freeze the milk immediately.
